Show the user why data isn't available to be displayed

I would like Databox to notify the user if they select a Metric that doesn't have any historical data available.

When getting started with Databox, the available options on metrics can be confusing.
Especially when working in a team environment. Members of my team have been very confused because they can "go back in time" (by selecting a Date Range on the Metric) but they do not see any of the data.

Example:
A social media account (Data Source) has existed since 2018, but we started with Databox in 2020. Only new data is being populated from the connection date forward, but a user can select Date Ranges where data "should" exist (e.g. in 2019 the social media account already existed). Since Databox only started collecting data in 2020, there isn't any 2019 data to be displayed within Databox.

These situations where data "should" exist because the account existed, but data wasn't able to be pulled into Databox (due to API limitations) need to be clearly communicated to the user.

As the person that set up the Data Source I know that there are limitations on the available historical data. And I communicated this to the team, but people can forget ... and since the interface allows the person to go back in time (but doesn't show any data), it can be very confusing to users.

Also, I am aware that I can: "Restrict ability to view additional Date Ranges for external viewer", but I need a solution that works for both - internal and external viewers.
Thanks!

Hi Ada,

Thank you for sharing your valuable feedback.

For now, we are sharing historical data availability in the following ways:
- Via the 'i' icon in the Datablock Editor (see an example screenshot attached)
- In our Help Article - Guides (help.databox.com/article/256-how-much-historical-data-is-synced-with-databox-when-i-first-connect-a-data-source)
- On the drop-down Date Range in app we are also communicating if a Date Range is not available due to Databox plan limitations (an example screenshot attached). More can be read here: help.databox.com/article/514-whats-the-maximum-amount-of-historical-data-accessible-on-my-current-plan.

Note: We are implementing Custom Date Range (CDR) functionality in Databox platform across our integrations, which allows us to gather more historical data.
- Check on which Data Sources CDR has already been implemented here: help.databox.com/article/449-overview-custom-date-ranges#which-data.
- You can monitor progress implementing CDR on other integrations here: roadmap.databox.com/b/integrations-with-cdr-support/.

As you mentioned, due to API limitations, some historical data might not be available to be pulled in Databox with the initial connection of Data Source or first use of the Data Source's metric in Databox. This is sometimes challenging with social media Data Sources data as well.

IMPORTANT:
We do have plans to offer our users more transparency regarding data availability in app (in Datablock Editor, on Databoards/Datablocks) this year. We aim to show more details about the reason of the ''missing data'', along with the time period.
Our team is actively working on this.
